In this one day class you will be guided through the process of making a beautiful kitchen instrument. You will choose between the following options:
1) Paring Knife - 4.5" blade, perfect as a versatile kitchen all-rounder
2) Alaskan Ulu - perfect as a pizza cutter, herb chopper etc.
Walking you the process, with each step demonstrated live by our instructor, you will learn the skills and techniques necessary to produce a stunning item. There is a variety of handle scales, liners, & pin colours to choose from.
The agenda for the day will look like this:
Morning
- Introduction, guide to forge safety, PPE, and use of equipment
- Choice of template (Paring Knife or Ulu), and handle materials
- Grinding the blade to a fine edge
- Hand sanding & polishing the blade
- Initial handle work, cutting & flattening scales
Afternoon
- Final handle shaping, drilling holes & test fit to blade
- Handle checks & glue-up
- Handle finishing, including final grinding, sanding & polishing
- Blade sharpening & testing
No prior experience is necessary.
Please note this is a non-forging workshop. Participants will start with a laser-cut blank and will not be using a hammer/anvil on this day.

Timings / Admin
- The course day will begin at 1000, and run until approximately 1600.
- Safety equipment is provided, but please ensure that you wear non-flammable clothing and sturdy shoes (preferably leather).
- Tea / Coffee / Biscuits will be provided. There are many local shops/cafes nearby for lunch.
- Please note, due to space and safety issues, spectators are not permitted on these courses.
