In this three day masterclass you will forge a sword to a design/style of your choosing.
This will be what is typically considered as a 'short sword', with a blade length of around 500-650mm, with a hilt section consisting of a forged crossguard & pommel, and a wooden handle. The blade will be double-bevelled, with a fuller down the middle.
No prior experience is necessary. The agenda for the course will look like the following:

Day One
- Introductions & course overview
- Forge safety & PPE for all participants
- Initial sword design & materials gathering
- Forging the blade & adding fuller
- Profile grinding the blade
Day Two
- Initial blade bevel grinding & tang shaping
- Forging the crossguard and pommel
- Normalisation & heat treatment of metal parts
- Final blade bevel grinding
Day Three
- Blade hand sanding and finishing
- Crossguard & pommel finishing
- Handle selection, shaping, sanding & finishing
- Blade construction & finalisation
- Course wrap-up & end.
At the end of the course you will go home with a fully finished and complete sword that you have made yourself, suitable for displaying as a focal piece in your home.
These swords will be made from mild steel, and should be considered decorative items only. To ensure safety, these swords will not be fully heat treated and will not be sharpened to a fine edge.

Timings / Admin
- Each day will begin at 1000, and run until approximately 1600.
- Safety equipment is provided, but please ensure that you wear non-flammable clothing and sturdy shoes (preferably leather).
- Tea / Coffee / Biscuits will be provided. There are many local shops/cafes nearby for lunch.
- Please note, due to space and safety issues, spectators are not permitted on these courses.
