Product Care Instructions

Everything made at Boneyard is real steel, forged and finished by hand, and with a little care it will last a lifetime. The main enemy is moisture: keep your piece clean, dry and lightly oiled, and it will stay looking good for years.

Knives (Viking Knife, Kitchen Knife, Paring Knife and Pizza Cutter)

  • Our blades are high-carbon steel. That's what lets them take and hold a great edge, but it also means they'll rust if left wet.
  • Wash by hand in warm, soapy water and dry straight away. Never put them in the dishwasher or leave them soaking in the sink.
  • Wipe on a thin coat of oil now and then, especially before storing. Use any food-safe oil for a kitchen knife. For a knife that won't touch food, a little WD40 is fine.
  • Over time the blade will darken to a grey or blue-grey patina. That's normal, and it actually helps protect the steel. If a spot of rust appears, rub it off gently with fine wire wool, then dry and oil the blade.
  • Store it dry: in a knife block, on a magnetic strip or with a blade guard, not loose in a drawer.
  • Use a wooden chopping board. Glass, stone, ceramic and plastic boards dull the edge quickly.
  • We sharpen to a good working edge on the day. To keep it keen, a basic sharpening stone or a leather strop works well, and there are plenty of good video tutorials online.
  • Wooden handles: wipe them clean rather than soaking them, and give them a little oil occasionally to stop them drying out.

Tomahawk Axe

  • The head is high-carbon steel, so the same rules apply: clean it, dry it and oil it after use, and don't store it damp.
  • We sharpen to a good working edge on the day. To keep it keen, a basic sharpening stone or a leather strop works well, and there are plenty of good video tutorials online.
  • Give the charred wooden handle a light oil now and then, and keep it out of the wet.

BBQ Tool Set

  • Wash and dry after every use, and don't leave the tools outside or in the wet.
  • Oil the steel lightly with a food-safe oil to stop rust. Hand wash only, because of the wooden handles.
  • To freshen the edge on the meat turner, use a strop or a basic stone.

Hooks, Bottle Openers and Wands (Introduction to Blacksmithing, Kids Club, Wizarding Wand)

  • These are mild steel with a wire-brushed finish. Keep them indoors and dry.
  • A light wipe of WD40 adds a protective layer and keeps the forged finish looking good.
  • We don't drill fixing holes in hooks, because we don't know where or how you'll hang them. Drill one to suit your own fixings using a metal drill bit.
